Battery Materials for Two-Wheeled Electric Vehicles

The materials used in electric two-wheeler batteries primarily depend on the specific battery type. Currently, the most common types found on the market are lead-acid batteries and lithium batteries, both of which exhibit distinct differences in their material composition.

 

The primary materials in lead-acid batteries include lead (Pb), lead dioxide (PbO₂), and a dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte. During the charging and discharging cycles, the lead and lead oxides undergo chemical reactions with the electrolyte, thereby facilitating the storage and release of electrical energy. These batteries feature a simple structure, low cost, and mature technology; consequently, they are widely utilized in entry-level and economy-class electric two-wheelers, although they are characterized by their heavy weight and relatively low energy density.

 

Lithium batteries, conversely, employ a more diverse range of materials. Common cathode materials include lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) and ternary lithium compounds (NCM/NCA); the anode typically consists of graphite materials, while the electrolyte is a combination of organic solvents and lithium salts. Lithium batteries are distinguished by their high energy density, lightweight nature, and long cycle life, making them the increasingly dominant choice for mid-to-high-end electric two-wheelers. At the same time, they impose stricter requirements regarding temperature control and safety management, necessitating the integration of a Battery Management System (BMS) to ensure protection.

 

Externally, the battery assembly features a casing-constructed from either metal or engineering plastics-designed to safeguard the internal components and enhance impact resistance. Internally, conductive materials such as copper and aluminum are employed as connectors to ensure stable current transmission. The specific combination of these various materials ultimately determines the performance, safety, and service life of an electric two-wheeler battery.
